Colours of Down, (2024)

Colours of Down, is inspired by the landscape of County Down and the vivid colour that exists beneath its big grey skies. The greens seem greener, the yellow of gorse brighter, with flashes of pink and purple appearing unexpectedly and electric.
The work is not a depiction of one particular place, but a response to the feeling of the landscape around me. Colour, weather and light being the subject.
Working in encaustic allows me to build up, scrape back and rework the surface, letting colours appear through one another. There is an unpredictability in the process that feels connected to the landscape itself.
I love the contrast in County Down between those soft, heavy skies and the extraordinary colour of the land below.
